While you’re composing your email in Apple Mail you’ll have that message in Draft folder and then you hit Send… and for some stupid reason you’re using the University IMAP system and the server is more broken the the Portuguese submarines and so your message just hangs there trying to go through at the amazing speed of 0KB/s. (Yes, that fast!) and then you realize that you can’t find the outgoing message. If you try to Cancel it it doesn’t help… it just sits there waiting for an half sent message to get some response from the server (the dead server by now) and you’re in desperate-need-to-get-home-really-fast mode. And finally you decide to look for your message, go to the outbox, open it and then decide to send it via your gmail account (or whatever other “free” service you subscribe), this  while the other process was almost finishing… At the end this is faster and you rush out the door and you never know if the first try really made to the server or not. Great!

so the final question is…..

A pretexto da luta contra o terrorismo dão-se os dados de todos os cidadãos portugueses a uma agência americana? Implica isto que o FBI acha que há portugueses que são terroristas? Pior, acha o nosso governo que há portugueses terroristas?

Isto requer grandes explicações por parte da governação. Isto é inadmissível.

Como não podia deixar de ser, o último dia do ano foi passado a trabalhar. Muitos detalhes para finalizar para que amanhã (que é feriado) tudo possa funcionar como previsto!

No caso a Newsletter do ASSYST tem que ser enviada (embora já esteja disponível num género de online first) e hoje foi preciso terminar os últimos detalhes e… naturalmente… é quando a lei de Murphy entra em acção e o Word 2008 resolve corromper uns ficheiros. Puxam-se os cabelos, as sapateiras vão ter que ser compradas noutra altura, almoça-se a correr qualquer coisa e faz-se mais um sprint. Agora é o cyberduck que acha que quero fazer upload de 4Gb para o servidor? 4Gb? está parvo? Acho que não tarda será enviado para o caixote do lixo.

O velho do scp é de confiança e salva o dia. Novo check, novo upload, agora é a password de um dos serviços que utilizamos que ficou num computador do ISCTE. Faz-se uma recuperação e espera-se… espera-se o email que não chega. Malditas Greylists para evitar o spam. Faz-se novo pedido de recuperação de password e esta já passa na greylist. Ok!

Vamos à última fase, coloca-se o documento na página, no site, prepara-se o email de amanhã, a notícia não sei para onde… etc e tal…. tudo pronto. Ainda não comprei o bolo rei, nem o panettone. Hm… O carro está sem gasolina. não posso acreditar, as bombas estão fechadas!

5 Horas, já chega. Desliga. Fecha tudo…

Lexicon packages the news in a way that its robo-clients can understand. It scans every Dow Jones story in real time, looking for textual clues that might indicate how investors should feel about a stock. It then sends that information in machine-readable form to its algorithmic subscribers, which can parse it further, using the resulting data to inform their own investing decisions. Lexicon has helped automate the process of reading the news, drawing insight from it, and using that information to buy or sell a stock. The machines aren’t there just to crunch numbers anymore; they’re now making the decisions.

The stock trade market is going into a path that will certainly doom it in the long run, I think. It’s not a trade market anymore and basically it’s more like a scrape market. The fundamental thing about human society is the interaction between its participants, this meaning also commercial interaction. Until now we used tools to help our decisions in the market, we always did, from calculators to computers. In the end the decision was human. Now we are relying in automated algorithms to do that job for us. This will, in the end, be a subversion of the principle that business is a social contract between two sentient parts. This, while making some (very few) rich, will make the transaction irrelevant in the context of social relations. Everything will be automated. We’ll do what whatever we want with our daily lives that the “System” will react and change accordingly in the “Automated Market System”. This is too dangerous, too irresponsible and in the end will prompt for disaster and new crisis. In the end if you remove the individual from the decision process you don’t need the individual anymore, for anything. That’s the big danger.

Agora que o ano está a terminar é costumeiro fazer-se um balanço do que passou. A verdade é que honestamente no final de 2010 penso que o mundo é um sítio pior. Infelizmente entramos numa era em que a fotografia que se faz do planeta não é simpática. Alguns exemplos:

A crise não acabou. Piorou imensamente, dando azo a que políticos pouco escrupulosos aplicassem medidas quase impensáveis de austeridade. Vamos passar a pagar taxas sobre tudo numa visão controladora por parte do estado, ao género do 1984.

A transparência e a integridade parecem ter sido abandonadas em favor da “imagem pública” a todo o custo. O caso Wikileaks veio por a nú a podridão da governação e da falta de palavra e de valores dos nossos (e os dos outros) políticos. Tudo vale desde que se mantenha o poder. Não há vergonha nem quando se é apanhado a mentir. É triste.

E no desporto, a Espanha ganhou o mundial de futebol. Acho que está tudo dito.

E agora a parte dos desejos para 2011…

Como já não acredito que o mundo vá melhorar o vou desejar coisas para mim.

Primeiro, quero ver se aprofundo os meus conhecimentos de python. A linguagem é uma maravilha e se durante o próximo ano se virem aumentos de desempenho será fantástico.

Segundo, desejo ter mais tempo para me dedicar à fotografia, coisa que pode ser difícil se andar muito entretido com o python, high performance computing, simulações de agentes, redes e afins, mas entre a fotografia instantânea e a digital lá se andará…

Terceiro, quero dar um grande avanço no PhD. A coisa tem andado meia abanada com outras ocupações (profissionais e não só e 2010 foi para esquecer) pelo que 2011 será sem dúvida para me concentrar novamente. Foca-te David, foca-te!

Enfim, não é pedir muito, mas já agora podiam ter um bocadinho mais de cuidado com o planeta Terra? e não estou só a falar de ecologia. Estou a falar principalmente das pessoas. Um bocadinho de respeito pelo Homem será pedir muito?

It could be one of the most ambitious computer projects ever conceived.An international group of scientists are aiming to create a simulator that can replicate everything happening on Earth – from global weather patterns and the spread of diseases to international financial transactions or congestion on Milton Keynes’ roads.

This will certainly be one of the most important projects in European Science for years to come. I’m very glad to be involved in it through the observatorium.
