The NYT has an interesting piece about the the end of the Point&Shoot cameras because of smartphones. Although smartphones cameras aren’t yet at the quality level of the Point ans Shoot cameras available in the market, I do think that smartphones will displace a lot of costumers. But this doesn’t mean that the P&S is dead. What we are witnessing is that High Quality P&S are displacing entry level DSLRs. I find myself for example going grabbing more time a P&S to go for a stroll than my DSLR. The reason is convenience. The little quality one gives up with the P&S is compensated with the portability factor. Although DSLR take great pictures (with great lenses) they are bulky and difficult to put in a daily pouch. P&S will do just fine. Where they will disappear is probably in the lower spectrum of P&Sland… where they offer less quality and where the quality of the smartphone cameras comes on par with them.
